A Child of God (You are special to God)

Teacher's Guide - this is just one possible lesson plan.  Visit the Child of God Bible lesson plan for further ideas to supplement this.

Introduction:

This next lesson is about God's care and concern with every detail of who we are.  Starting when we were just a seed and God formed us just the way he wanted.  God is everywhere and concerned with each one of us and David wrote this psalm (139) with an overwhelming sense of that.  David's prayer is for God to examine his heart and see his loyalty and to keep him on the right track.  For older children I would encourage you to read an easy Bible version of this psalm before you read the children's version provided below.

The message:  

Preschool thru Grade 1: God knows me and I am important to him.

Grades 2 and 3: God knows everything about me.  Search my heart God and keep me loyal to you.

I've split this message into two separate ones depending on the age level.  For the younger children, the message is simple: God knows me and I am important to him.  For the older children, we expand on this message and say:  God knows everything about me.  Search my heart and keep me loyal to you.

Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson.  Send the A Child of God Take Home Sheet  home with the children to encourage parents to reiterate the message during the week.  It includes a poster at the bottom that the children can color and hang on their wall or refrigerator. 

Preview of the lesson:

Some people like to do craft time first and story time second and some like to switch it around.  I like the first option, myself.

Always consider offering Coloring Pages for children who aren't interested in participating in the group activity (or if you get done the group activities very quickly and need something to fill in the spare time).  Everyone has a need for "alone time" once in awhile.  Also, sending home the coloring pages with the Take Home sheet provides parents with much needed help in reinforcing the lessons.  You can make a nice little booklet each week with the take home sheet on top -- I promise that most parents will appreciate the effort!

Welcome!  

Receive name tags.  Have the children use crayons, markers, yarn, feathers and whatever other materials (such as sparkle glue) that you have available to personalize their name tag.

Sing the Learning our Names song 

 10 to 15 minutes Self Portrait name tags, scissors (or adults can precut), crayons, markers, yarn, safety pins or tape.

Craft time!

Preschool thru Grade 1: Make the Easy Train Paper Craft.  This craft is about Jesus helping us stay on track.  Just like David asked God at the end of this psalm to search him and help him grow in his relationship; we also need to ask God for help to stay on track

Grade 2 and 3:  Make the Recipe Card for Me.  This should emphasize that God made each one for a special purpose and reason.  He had a plan for them.  Have them write the memory verse on the back of the card (Psalm 139:13,14) and a prayer to God.

Bible Story Time:

Preschool thru Grade 1:  Read A Child of God (or read from your own store bought children's bible).   

Grades 2 and 3:  It's tough to know when it's the right time to start readings from the Bible, but if the children have been read a children's version of the story in the past, I believe this is a good age to introduce the King James (or your preferred) bible reading. 

 10 minutes The Coloring Pages can be distributed to the children so they are able to color at home, or during the story.  

 

Closing:

Preschool thru Grade 1: depending on the time remaining ask the children if there is anything God doesn't know about them?  Can they hide anything from God?  Remind them that God is on their side and he made them exactly how he wanted them.  It is important to talk to God and ask Him to help them learn and follow Him.

Grade 2 and 3: depending on the time remaining ask the children what are some things they can hide from God?  Is God there to punish them when they do something wrong or is he cheering for them trying to help them get on the right track?  Like David keep praying that God will help you grow and know Him more.
