Miracles - Part 1

Introduction:
This lesson will help younger children to understand what a miracle is. Talk a bit about how we can turn some of the cant's in life into can's by sharing what we have with others! This can be done by sharing our possessions, sharing our skills or time. And remember..."If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has not pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?" 1 John 3:17
The message:
Preschool thru Grade 1: Jesus shared His miracle with
five thousand people, what can we share?
Grades 2 and 3: Jesus did the impossible, how can we do the impossible?
I've split this message into two separate ones depending on the age level. For the younger children, the message is simple: Jesus shared His miracle, what can we share with others that can help them? For the older children, we expand on this message and say that Jesus did the impossible, how can we do the impossible? Only with God's help and guidance can we know how to help and give the help that other's really need.
Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson. Send the Jesus Feeds 5,000 Take Home Sheet home with the children to encourage parents to reiterate the message during the week. It includes a poster at the bottom that the children can color and hang on their wall or refrigerator.

Some people like to do craft time first and story time second and some like to switch it around. I like the first option, myself.
Always consider offering Coloring Pages or you could look at the Fish Coloring Pages for children who aren't interested in participating in the group activity (or if you get done the group activities very quickly and need something to fill in the spare time). Everyone has a need for "alone time" once in awhile. Also, sending home the coloring pages with the Take Home sheet provides parents with much needed help in reinforcing the lessons. You can make a nice little booklet each week with the take home sheet on top -- I promise that most parents will appreciate the effort!

| Welcome! Receive name tags. Have the children use crayons, markers, yarn, feathers and whatever other materials (such as sparkle glue) that you have available to personalize their name tag. Sing the Learning our Names song |

Craft time!Preschool thru Grade 1: Make the
Heart Fish Paper Craft. There are many options with this craft
to increase the difficulty. For younger children you
might want to precut the pieces, but allow them to color it. Grade 2 and 3: Make the CD Rom Fish Craft. Hopefully you have some old CD's lying around or go to a used music store they might be able to give you some for cheap or even free if you tell them what you're using it for. Another option would be to make the Unleavened Bread and Tuna snack which is also in the closing section of this guide.

Bible Story:Preschool thru Grade 1: Read The Story of Jesus Feeding Five Thousand (or read from your own store bought children's bible). Grades 2 and 3: It's tough to know when it's the right time to start readings from the Bible, but if the children have been read a children's version of the story in the past, I believe this is a good age to introduce the King James (or your preferred) bible reading. |

Closing:Preschool thru Grade 1: depending on the time remaining ask the children how they think Jesus did the miracle (of course we don't know but God helped Him). Do they think that miracles still happen today? Even though we can't do miracles, how can we help others? Grade 2 and 3: depending on the time remaining allow the children to discuss why Jesus did miracles? (to help others, to heal, to teach them something...) How can each of us help others when we think its impossible? (turn to God for help: "For nothing is impossible with God." Luke 1:37) All Grades: Make the Unleavened Bread and Tuna snack to help reinforce the lesson. If you want something a bit more simple try the Gold Fish Snack. Standard ending song: for example We love to learn together, substitute "learn" for sing, pray, etc (to the tune of The More We Get Together) |
